The Samfund is a nonprofit organization that provides financial grants to young adult cancer survivors for a wide range of cancer-associated costs, including for reproductive services and for family building.

Family building grants fall into two categories:

  1. Grants to help with the storage of eggs, embryos or sperm for the purpose of fertility preservation. These grants are issued for up to $1000.00. and
  2. Grants for certain fertility procedures and family-building options including for fertility testing, Intrauterine insemination (IUI), In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), costs associated with gestational carrier services, and costs associated with adoption. These grants are issued for up to $4000.

The Samfund’s founder, Sam Watson, is herself a survivor of young adult cancer who understands the financial challenges AYAs face during and as a result of their cancer diagnosis and treatment. It is her experience that has shaped the work and the efforts of The Samfund and its grant program.

The family-building grants from the Samfund can profoundly impact a survivor’s life after cancer. One recipient, Tim, explained how these funds allowed him to attain his goal of fatherhood:

“After a devastating cancer diagnosis at the age of 27, and following cancer treatments, I found myself struggling with infertility due to radiation treatments. My wife and I struggled for almost 10 years to have a child. We went through several fertility treatments without any luck. I then received a grant from The Samfund to help me build a family- a long time dream of mine. Thanks to the grant, my wife and I were able to afford IVF treatments and are now the proud and thankful parents of a beautiful 3 month old baby girl!”
