Fertility Risks From Treatment
Who is at Risk?
Cancer can take its toll on fertility in two ways.
- The cancer itself can affect the reproductive organs (e.g., uterine cancer, testicular cancer) as well as glands responsible for producing related hormones, such as the pituitary gland.
- Cancer treatment can damage such organs. Or, the organs may need to be removed completely. For example, women may no longer produce eggs after radiation to the pelvis. Surgical removal of both testes would prevent a man from producing sperm.
